Case Understanding

Ramalingam Foods was established by Mr. Ramalingam Venkatesh in Bombay in 1965. The establishment was famous for south Indian cooked food and filter coffee. Ramalingam Foods was able to overcome emergency during 1975 when they started selling ready to cook batter and chutney at low-cost. Later Mr. Vijay Ramalingam took over the business and expanded the product variety to include instant mixes of Idli, Dosa, Ladoo, Gulab Jamun and many other dishes. Management noticed that people carried these items in huge quantities abroad and even restaurants were using these mixes. These products were a huge hit in Middle East, Southeast and UK region. Mr. Ramalingam has no prior experience of international expansion, they don’t have sufficient budget and neither license or certifications. They have therefore requested the company to look into their international expansion plan.

BCS Solution Summary

The IT and Business Analytics Department will set the building block of information on which Ramalingam Foods will setup and expand. The department will look into the consumer choices, taste preferences, purchasing power and frequency of trying out new cuisines. As this is an instant mix, it would be interesting to see the response among early morning commuters, office and school goers. The IT Department will provide support to other departments for their expansion. Following areas will need focus to reach to a final solution and thereafter expansion. 1. Python and AI based forecasting for analysis of data of packaged food industry in countries in South East Asian region. 2. Website with user friendly interface for Ramalingam Foods 3. Logistics application to keep a check on the warehouse storage capacity and requirement at the start and end of each period. 4. Unique product code, country code, amazon standard identification number (ASIN), GTIN, Import Export Code (IEC) network 5. Cloud based software to track financial reports and data. 6. ERP system for workers and HR department

Solution

The IT department want to spearhead the expansion for Ramalingam Foods by collecting data for consumer preferences, choices among the Southeast region natives and Indian diaspora. Once the data is analysed, production, procurement, shipment and distribution can be decided accordingly. Te IT department has following solutions to offer:

1. Using advanced AI systems to understand consumer purchasing trends and practices.

2. A mobile application to track invenory in stock in warehouses and departmental stores to avoid overstock and wastage. 

3. Hadoop network for supply chain networks to live track shipments and market fluctuations.

4. Website for Ramamlingam Foods to sell their products online and query addresal apart from partnering with big players like Amazon. 

5. Putting an effective ERP system to manage data for employees. 

 

Conclusion
The main aim of the IT department would be to function as backbone to other departments and enable them with cutting edge technology. Deploying cloud based platforms as these are affordable and easy to work with. The security of data would be taken care by IT Security team
