Case Understanding

Who are we, what we do and how? • We are Swoosh, the electric motor vehicle manufacturing firm. The sector of electric vehicle is in nascent stage and would initially require considerable inputs being put in before arriving at consequential profits. • However, electric vehicles are the natural progression of human transportation system which started eon ago with the invention of wheel. The world is moving towards looking at alternatives to protect environment. The replacement of oil guzzling machines is the topmost priority in many places to protect the future. Profits and Purpose both lie in making an investment in electric motor vehicles and we at Swoosh firmly believe in that ideology. • The support such an endeavour receives is immense. Civil Society, Governments, Conscious individuals and Private firms are all looking to embrace the technology. Governments are especially aiming at promoting electric vehicles. • Setting up a new company however is a challenging task. While the technology can be sourced with a little effort, sourcing of employees needs an extreme amount of accuracy. Right fit is essential and HR therefore plays a very important role of identifying the individuals who not only resonate with the company’s ideologies but are also competent and possess a calm personality. Hiring is very competitive and one of the hardest things. It should be given the correct amount of attention during the inception of the start-up.

The HR checklist:

  • Human resources have to be sourced after thorough technical screening. We need to find the right mix of Machine Learning tools and HR analytics and chose the best of the rest. As it is a start-up, we need to be mindful of the fact that bulk recruitment might not be option. In the limited number of available personnel, Swoosh needs to get the best of the best from the best of rest.
  • Get the work culture mix perfectly right and showcase that work culture to the world. Attract the people by ensuring that we have charted the best courses of work place practises
  • Map the financial estimations perfectly. Jot down the t’s and dot the I’s to the last letter and come up, in collaboration with the estimations department, the financial cost of not only establishing the workspace but also the hiring cost which is going to be incurred. Hiring cost is going to include the amount needed to identify the personnel, the training costs which are going to be incurred which is a priority to ensure smoother transition of individuals into embracing the values of the organisation
  • Clearly establish communication channels and make sure staff are making the optimum use of it in interacting with peers and superiors
Conclusion
HR is the most important domain in a start up as it helps in establishing a value system among the workforce. A value system which is in synergy with the goals of the organisation
