Marketing Department's Suggestions to Create or Choose Various Appropriate Methods of Sales and Energy Service Centers Expansion

Case Understanding

The marketing department of SELCO debunked the myths that poor people cannot afford or maintain sustainable technologies. They do this by creating and disseminating educational content that highlights SELCO India's successful installations and financing methods. The marketing team works to build and maintain SELCO India's brand trust, especially in rural areas. SELCO India's marketing department plays a vital role in promoting the innovative designs of their products. They create marketing campaigns and materials that highlight how each solution is customized to meet the specific needs of the end-users. The marketing department is integral to SELCO India's expansion plans. They need to create marketing strategies that address the company's challenges, such as the need to reach a broader demographic and bring affordable and sustainable energy solutions to the 40-crore low-income group in India. This might involve market research and crafting marketing campaigns to reach these areas.

BCS Solution Summary

The comprehensive approach of SELCO India include diversifying products, local franchise models, training, and partnerships to extend energy access to 40 crore low-income Indians.

Solution

Product Line Expansion:

Having diverse energy needs of low-income group communities and rural areas, SELCO India has to cater to these needs from basic lighting to more advanced applications like agriculture which is the most critical as 65% of the rural population is dependent on agriculture for livelihood as of 2021 data [1]. It aligns with the management principle of product diversification.

SELCO has to undertake market research to understand specific local energy demands. A product preference survey needs to be taken through questionnaire interviews if there are 4 four different products, one may prefer only 1 product, one may prefer 2 products, and so on. The calculation of market demand is provided in the PDF attached named Solution 1 for a solar panel device. Considering an average of 10 kWh of electricity per day is required in every household[2]. An average solar panel with a power rating of 250-400 watts generates 1.5 kWh of electricity per day[3]. In that case average of 10 solar panels would be required for every household. The price of the solar panel could be as low as INR 10,000 in the Indian market. The calculation is done keeping the preferences of each of the products are same for the entire population. The marketing team can use this framework to assess the demand for the relevant products after getting the data on the number of people preferring any product and its corresponding price.

Sales Network Expansion:

A robust sales network is required to reach 40 crore people and involves a mix of strategic approaches. This aligns with the management principle of market expansion and distribution.

Execution Strategy:

Local Franchise Model: To ensure the success of franchisees, SELCO India can provide comprehensive training on solar technology and business management. Regular monitoring and support will be essential to maintain quality standards.

Direct Sales Force: A dedicated sales force with local people is important to build trust and educate customers about the benefits of solar solutions. Training programs on communication, product knowledge, and customer service are crucial.

Digital Platforms: Though internet users in rural India have 37% penetration[4], developing a user-friendly mobile app or web platform for online sales will help overcome weak physical infrastructure in rural communities and outskirts of urban cities.

Energy Service Centers Expansion:

Energy service centers are vital to ensure customers availing the solar solutions can access maintenance and support, promoting long-term product reliability. This aligns with the management principles of customer service and support.

Execution Strategy:

Empowering Local Entrepreneurship: SELCO India can identify motivated individuals from rural areas and offer them training on solar system maintenance and business management. Supplying them with genuine spare parts and technical support is crucial.

Community-Based Centers: Partnering with local organizations or cooperatives can lead to cost-effective service centers managed by locals who understand the community's needs and can provide a sense of ownership.

Marketing Department Strategy:

To address the challenge of weak network coverage in rural areas, the marketing department can employ the following strategies basis the management principles of adaptability to cater to unique challenges of rural markets to strengthen the reach of the products:

Localized Marketing: Local influencers and community leaders connect with potential customers more effectively and build trust. Using local language and culturally sensitive messaging is respectful and relatable. Identification of influential figures within the community and involving them in promoting SELCO's products. Conduct events in rural areas where local leaders can endorse the benefits of solar solutions.

Mobile Marketing: As per 2022 data of Annual Survey for Education Report, 74.8% of households in rural communities use smartphones[5]. Best way to use mobile marketing is conducting SMS campaigns to reach potential customers. These campaigns can provide information on the advantages of solar energy, how to contact SELCO, and where to find the nearest service centers. Voice call campaigns can be used to educate potential customers and guide them through the sales process.

Partnerships: Most importantly, partnering with local organizations, businesses, and microfinance institutions is an effective way to expand the network and leverage existing relationships within rural communities. Collaborating with local NGOs and self-help groups to organize joint awareness campaigns and product demonstrations. Partnership with microfinance institutions to offer financing options, making solar solutions more affordable.

They need to plan to expand their product line to cater to diverse energy needs, conduct market research to understand local preferences and assess demand for their products for which the framework has been provided in the solution. Additionally, SELCO India can aim to expand its sales network through various strategies. This includes a local franchise model, a direct sales force, and the development of digital platforms including mobile marketing due to significant penetration to reach customers in areas with weak physical infrastructure.
